Introduction: Anxiety and depression are common mental health problems that affect the well-being and academic performance of university students. Objective: To determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety among health sciences students at a public university in the state of Tabasco. Materials and Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted with 101 undergraduate students. The Mexican Inventory of Anxiety, Depression, and Suicidal Ideation (IMADIS) was administered, considering only the anxiety and depression variables. Results: A total of 42 men and 59 women participated in the study. The prevalence of anxiety and depression was higher among female students, with both variables reaching elevated levels. Discussion: The findings are consistent with previous studies reporting a high prevalence of anxiety and depression among health sciences students, particularly among women, students aged 21 to 23 years, and Nursing students. Cognitive components of anxiety and depression predominated, supporting Beck’s cognitive theory, which explains how these components are associated with academic concerns and recurrent negative thoughts. Conclusion: A significant presence of anxiety and depression was identified, particularly among women, highlighting the need to implement mental health promotion, prevention, and care strategies within the university setting.
